The Open Compute Project has received a lot of attention and interest from the computing industry because of its innovative transformation of data center architecture and its components. One of key innovations of the OCP is a 21” rack architecture, and systems that are designed to increase computing density and energy efficiency. As the leading telecom operator in Korea, SK Telecom has tried to find ways to enhance its efficiency of data center and network infrastructure. In order to achieve the goal, adoption of new technology is inevitable which surmount the limitation of legacy technology. However, most telco datacenters are designed to accommodate 19” standard IT equipment, and the adoption of OCP gears to existing datacenter needs meticulous analysis. As the first step of introduction of new technology, we conducted OCP trial for telco infrastructure with three objectives in mind: (1) Analysis of OCP System Deployment Environment, (2) Evaluation of Efficiency, Serviceability, and Performance, (3) Application Test. For this upcoming talk, SK Telecom would like to discuss about the details of OCP trial results including procurement process, data center deployment environment, testbed design, benchmark test results, and so on. We especially would like to share comparison between 19” rack mount server and 21” OCP system in various environments. We also would like to discuss OCP environment of Korea where OCP ecosystem is not mature and has relatively small market; and address the practical issues – vendor selection, existing datacenter deployment, technical support, compatibility – and ask to OCP telco members for collaboration to solve those issues.
